Varian Medical Systems

Palo Alto, California

Varian’s new location for the research and development product groups was a building with two 50,000-sf floor plates and limited access to natural light. The team incorporated several light wells to bring light deeper into the building’s interior while containing sound and maintaining the necessary security control between floors. On the first floor, the areas under light shafts are common gathering spaces while the second floor spaces use the shafts to acoustically separate teams and visually provide interest as the daylight changes. Work areas include open and closed offices, conference and team rooms, break areas, and a large meeting space.
