Sutter Morgan Hill Clinic

Bringing Healthcare Closer to Home

Sutter Health has been strategizing to make healthcare more accessible in Northern California, establishing more outpatient medical office centers around the region. After leasing a building on Juan Hernandez Drive in Morgan Hill to house an imaging suite, Sutter charged DES and our design-build partner Level 10 Construction with renovating the rest of the building to meet Sutter standards. The imaging suite opened right away and, after a few months of occupancy, feedback from end users revealed the need for additional upgrades. To meet these needs, Sutter increased the scope of the project to accommodate additional healthcare services, including general care, pediatrics, lab/blood draw, and imaging.

Working in a Design-Build partnership with Level 10 Construction, DES delivered phased renovations that allowed the MRI, ultrasound, and CT imaging suite to open first, supporting Sutter’s rapid expansion of accessible care in the region.

As Sutter’s design standards evolved mid-project, our team responded in real time—upgrading additional suites, integrating new brand guidelines, and maintaining quality and consistency under tight timelines. A fast-tracked move-in evolved into a larger scope as user feedback revealed that an imaging suite was a crucial necessity. Phased occupancy and schedule pressures were met through flexibility and close team coordination.

During the project, local regulations required accessibility surveys, which had the potential to cause schedule impacts. Cognizant of the community need for this new health clinic, Sutter and the team negotiated with the City to be granted a certificate of occupancy prior to the exterior accessibility survey. As a part of improving accessibility, our team created a new accessible walkway from the street to the building entrance, further integrating the facility in the neighborhood.

I could not be more excited that Sutter Health is growing in the Morgan Hill community.”

Catherine Krna, Ambulatory CEO, Greater Silicon Valley, Sutter Health

Creating a new regional hub, the establishment of this new clinic building brings physicians and other providers to Morgan Hill, where previously the local residents were traveling to San Jose, Santa Cruz or even Mountain View to see a Sutter primary care doctor or receive other general services within the network. In the clinic’s first six months of opening, local residents have already expressed their enthusiasm for the new health clinic, citing the location and ease of access to an array of services, efficient and friendly staff, and high quality of care received.

The fast-tracked adaptive reuse transformed 4 suites into 9,950-sf of space for general care, pediatrics, imaging, bloodwork/lab, waiting rooms, exam rooms, offices, and breakrooms.

Fully aligned with Sutter Health’s commitment to delivering patient-centered care, the project exemplifies DES’s ongoing partnership with Sutter Health, combining speed, technical coordination, and client collaboration to deliver efficient, high-performance medical facilities.

Access to high-quality, innovative healthcare – and the clinicians who provide it – is critically important.”
